On many international and national forms we are supposed to profile ourselves according to race and/or ethnicity. Many people, like I have done, will list their ethnicity or race based on one or a few ancestors nationality or nationalities. Does this encourage us to judge appearances and profile others as well? Could this contribute to racism and related forms of discrimination?
I've heard people say that when one political party is in power, only their ethnic group will benefit. Also that employers will intentionally ignore applicants that are of the opposite ethnicity/race. I've also noted that one of the most popular questions I've heard people ask when meeting someone new is "what are you?" referring to their ethnicity or race more than their country of origin. What are your thoughts on this?
Personally, I'm confused by what defines someone's ethnicity. I grew up being told one thing by my family and after doing my own research it kinda doesn't add up.
