Do you Social Net Work?

Facebook According to a new report from Web security firm ScanSafe a third of employers are now blocking access to social networking sites. Companies blocking such sites has risen 17 percent over the past year.

ScanSafe says that Facebook usage grew by 270 percent in the last year and has 52 million users globally. MySpace still has the lead among social networking sites with 114 million users and LinkedIn is quickly gaining ground within the business community.

The popular social networks are getting a lashing at workplaces worldwide as employers recognize how much time employees are spending on it, and the possible phishing attacks that could occur. Like YouTube, IM’s and various other time wasting websites, companies are starting to get the fall out from lost productivity and are forced to shut access off.

Locally I would believe the corporate issues to be similar and have heard reports that some companies have at times blocked access to Triniscene, and now with the gaining popularity of Facebook is this now a common occurrence?

As it has been noted that 49% of all corporate web traffic is not work related Allyuh asks, as an employee does your company limit your internet activity?

my current employer doesn’t neither did my previous… I know people whose employers block practically everything… and I totally agree with blocking… not only for security reasons… but productivity does suffer… guess where i am now :D

there are persons who genuinely need access to online resources but many company resources are already overloaded by non-work related emails… something I also have a problem with…

the thing is I am not sure I can operate under conditions where anything is blocked. It may be time to think of how an employer can harness the productivity of an employee while not infringing on their personal activities. One could argue that when you are on company time you are supposed to be doing company business but most persons with access to the internet do not have a full eight hours of work to get done and if they do they are not enjoying it..

i know i can’t operate without access… and even when i have a full days work i still need to escape to the net… because it breaks the monotony

its about managing the time you have while @ your workplace… if you can’t - get a machine @ home, contact an ISP and spend as much time online as you want… just remember that tomorrow you may have to go to work…
