Express Yourself

Since when is the Trinidad Express an avenue for press releases. With it’s traffic rank being number 22 you would expect that the quality would not reflect the literal numbers of their rank position, plus the press release niche has already been filled.

Looking at this Express Digicel article on the unveiling of their “new” vehicular tracking system it reads of a corporate PR department becoming a newspaper reporter.

It seems that no original thought or opinion was added to even buffer the article to incite a reaction or trigger some thought. One could have expanded and asked the question of if this technology will be coming to Trinidad in the near future, possibly in its current form or as a possible theft deterrent device.

One could possibly raise the issues concerning privacy and mention any functionality to periodically switch off the system when requested. But no, the choice was made to go with the article in its current form.

To add insult to injury Digicel made the launch of the vehicular tracking service on its own website back in May and now in June the Express unveils it.

The question though may be who is to blame, Digicel for possibly sending another PR release or the Express for buying it wholesale.

It’s not just a press release, it’s news because it’s new to the Caribbean.

In case you aren’t aware, this is how a lot of news comes about. Companies send out press releases and news is a repurposed Press Release.

“It seems that no original thought or opinion was added to even buffer the article to incite a reaction or trigger some thought.” - It’s news, reporting facts, not an analysis of it.

There’s no need for “implications” of this or if it’s coming to Trinidad yet, that’s not what this is about, it’s about Jamaica and the reason we are getting the news is because Digicel is in Trinidad.

Also, it’s probable this would have been in the “regional” area of the paper.
