Akon’s Party Politics
Apr 24th, 2007 by Dre
As expected this incident has garnered sufficient attention to be utilized for political mileage and criticisms.
Firstly we have Fitzgerald Hinds calling for legal action against Akon:
“Akon means ‘convict’ and I feel he should be a ‘convict’ in Trinidad and Tobago,” Hinds said, “having possibly committed a criminal offense of lewd dancing in public”.
That’s find but he then Hinds continues by referring to Danah as stupid:
“Notwithstanding her stupidity, she deserved the protection of adults. And I saw adults in that function cheering on that convict,” he said.
The backlash against Hinds’ comment had begun, however they seem to only have come from the family of Danah:
Her brother Ian Alleyne said of Hinds’s comment “we have the second coming of Jesus Christ in Trinidad, because he (Hinds) is the only human being who has never done anything wrong in his entire life”.
Patrick Manning is now looking into the issue, pointing fingers in Zen’s direction and asking for the nation to forgive Danah:
“I have taken very careful notice of this matter and the owner of Zen owes it to the public to take responsibility. I will be interfacing with Zen because that kind of thing should never be allowed to happen in this country.
“The owner (of Club Zen) should not be allowed to have such a kind of scene, (and) the public should forgive Danah.”
While Education Minister Hazel Manning is “saddened” by what she saw. She added that her ministry has received a request to provide counseling for Danah through the School Services Support Unit.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police Winston Cooper has launched a probe into Zen following the Akon concert citing the Liquor and Children’s Law and the fact that a minor was involved.
Meanwhile Danah’s brother pleads for her to be left alone:
“I am asking the entire nation to leave this individual alone. She is young and she has admitted her mistake. Can you imagine the stress that she is under?” Alleyne asked.
“I am asking the nation…Please, back off a bit. I listened to the radio stations and I am disappointed by all the statements that I am hearing.
“Again, I am asking the entire nation…let the healing process start. I don’t care about Zen; my focus is on Danah.”
Two things to note about the media coverage:
-
1. Danah name is being spelt different ways in the reporting from Deena, Danah. Her recently removed Hi5 profile had indicated Danah as the correct spelling.
2. Danah is also now reported to being 15 years of age.
My take:
-
1. It wouldn’t be Trinidad if politicians did not get involved.
2. Zen should be investigated, however we all know that is not getting anywhere.
3. Ian, Danah’s brother should stop making statements if they want to see this blow over.
4. The media needs to get their facts straight, they have had interviews with her right?
Your thoughts?

You havent yet mentioned to people - those of us abroad need it perhaps more than Trinidadians at home - that inspite of youtube and akon’s agent’s attempt at censorship, the “incident” is still freely available on westindiantube. I think that is just fantastic and makes the case right there for local ownership of absolutely everything. yay! power to the people. anybody who has any doubts about what went on, just have a look.
Frances, you have already adequately mentioned westindiantube.com twice and the fact that the video can be found there. The truth is the video can now be found with a simple search engine query on numerous sites.
Till today, no less than 7 people known to me but not to each other, have emailed me the pictures of this girl in Zen, and from her Hi5 and MySpace pages. The pictures show a girl posing seductively for the camera, her very demeanour suggesting a ‘come hither’ sexual beckoning.
Frankly, I don’t think she is as innocent as she makes herself out to be, but at the same time, she does not deserve that this be made so widespread. She and her parents are to be blamed for her situation but it would be nice to see it die down, and the ENTIRE family receive counselling. Which they need.
I fully expected Pa-trick to join in, as a prospective future preacher himself, he would support the family in this issue.
Well done Dre, an exceptional write.
Thanks Jumbie. I myself had visited the Hi5 page while it was still active but made a decision to not post it here.
Only now that it has been removed I have posted the link to illustrate the naming convention and because I believe that at some point closure on this issue needs to happen.
Maybe in 6 more days?
I think that Hi5 removed her page because of the controversy. Her MySpace page is still up - even if she banned from the computer now, yuh mean she couldn’t call a friend and say “take down dat page for me, nah?”
I think she removed her own page. Hi5 would not have gotten involved. The MySpace page that is floating around in emails seems to be a tribute page, someone ripped all the information off of her Hi5 page and reposted it and may not necessarily be hers.
Stupid dugla
Now i was sympathetic with Danah but after seeing her space account and what it had on it. I was very distastefull.
The link is http://www.myspace.com-divatrixie.
I really think they should get rid of that account.
[...] YouTube certainly seems to think that this is the Danah Alleyne from Zen that was part of the well documented Akon [...]
Nobody should feel sorry for this little girl. she knew exactly what she was doing. Her father should be a man and face the reallity that his daughter is a HOE!! HE SHOULD STOP BLAMING AKON FOR HIS BAD PARENTING AND IF HE STILL NEEDS PROOF, HE SHOULD WATCH THE VIDEOS THEY AREN’T HARD TO FIND. YOU COULD EVEN FIND ANOTHER ONE OF HER AT ANOTHER CLUB. DANCING LIKE THE LITTLE HOE THAT SHE IS. AKON SHOULD HAVE NEVER GOT BLAMED FOR N E THING!!!
